Acrylic paint on urethane coated bar?

Acrylic paints will peel and or chip off of the urethane finish very easily and quickly. Like you figured, the best bet is to sand and prime first. Another option is to paint on the urethane (even though it will be weak), apply a clear coat, then top with a piece of gl cut to fit to protect it from damage. Good luck!
