Wireless laptop, wireless printer, why can't they talk to each other? Do they need a router?

It seems a new Toshiba Satelite Laptop and a new HP printer (both are wireless) don't want to talk to each other. Is it necessary to use a router between them? Wireless mice and keyboards don't use routers? Just can't figure this one out, so, any recommentations or suggestionare greatly appreciated
