Inline engines for beginning riders?

My brother says that as a beginning rider I should start on a V twin instead of an inline, But i really like the "sport" bike looks more than the cruisers. In your experienced opinion, would I be okay starting on an inline as opposed for a v twin as long as I respect the bike? My brother said something about the rear wheel skidding or something on down shifts for turns if you dont time it right or something? Also, I'm 6'2 220lbs so i'm a big guy, should/would I be fine riding a 600cc+ bike? I feel like i midget any bike under that? Remember, I'm still a beginning rider but I have taken the California CHP recommended safety course
