How safe is Medellin?

I've heard that Colombia is quite bad for kidnappings because the drug trade is slipping. in realistic terms what are the chances I get confronted with a bad situation in Medellin, because I'm thinking of going and thats the only thing thats putting me off. Also what is the city/town like as a place in general. What kind of things are there to do and what are the local people like?
