Could the moon protect us fro an asteroid threat?

scientist say the odds are 10,000 to 1 (more or less) that we may get hit by an life altering, catastrophic, armageddon like asteroid and some common people believe it will happen one day in our lifetime or in the next. I was wondering if conditions were right could the moon act as a shield?
